"An SPF a day keeps the wrinkles away"

Why it is important to use SPF

SPF is known as the sun protection factor, which measures how well the sunscreen or spray will protect your skin from UV rays. The topical lotion or spray also typically protects our skin from other harmful factors during the duration of the time you are in the sun. Even when the sun is not out or even if it is just cloudy outside it is still important to apply sunscreen for the UV that may seep through. You can still be susceptible to the damaging rays of the sun, which can over time lead to skin cancer, wrinkles, and discoloration. If you were considering adding SPF to your skincare or beauty routine, then here is your sign to do so!

SPF rating scale

The SPF rating scale was introduced in 1974, with SPF30 being the most common recommended SPF to use. According to multiple studies, SPF30 blocks out 97% of UVB rays while using an SPF of 50 blocks about 98%. These measurements are based on how long it takes the skin to get a minimal burn when covered with sunscreen, anything higher does not add greater protection which can be very misleading. The most important thing when choosing an SPF besides the number is to choose one labeled “Broad Spectrum,” that blocks out both UVA and UVB rays or has UVA protection that is at least 1/3 of the UVB protection. We recommend being mindful of the type of SPF sunscreen you use because of the harmful ingredients that can cause more damage than protection. Organic ingredients such as Zinc, Zinc Oxide, and Titanium dioxide are the way to go when looking for the right SPF sunscreen to protect your skin and add to your skincare products.

The takeaway

Here at Blass Beauty, we are all about protecting the skin, so we recommend wearing SPF sunscreen every day, even in the winter or when you don’t think you are getting any sun. Look for labels that don’t contain ingredients that are harmful to your skin. We also recommend using a base layer of moisturizer under your sunscreen, our Blass Balm is the perfect all-natural moisturizer, which can also be used as a primer. Start your day with prepping a layer on your skin then apply  an SPF sunscreen of your choose before heading out, especially for those hot summer days!
